When I was stationed at an Air Force base near Tacoma, WA, I frequently picked up some signals from Hawaii. Wouldn't a 5K nondirectional signal interfere with KCBS-AM 740 in San Francisco?

Probably not in KCBS' protected contour. Its a class B station so its skywave coverage is not protected.
